At AKYN, our design philosophy is deeply rooted in nature. We focus on regenerative, natural and botanic fibres– like organic or regenerative cotton, responsible wool, European flax, and botanically-sourced Lyocell. Our goal is for 100% of our garment outers to be crafted from natural fibres that restore rather than deplete.
You won’t find virgin polyester in our collections. While scalable solutions for recycling fossil-based synthetics are still out of reach, we use recycled synthetics only when essential– for durability or specific technical needs– and always in minimal amounts.
We stay curious and open, always exploring emerging innovations in fashion and textiles. As the industry evolves, so will we– guided by best practices and a belief that progress is a continual process.
We envision a future free from plastic– and stand proudly against the expansion of new oil and gas fields. We champion those creating better alternatives, collaborating with emerging innovators and sustainable startups to help them grow, scale, and thrive. Because real change happens when we move forward together.
TENCEL™-branded Lyocell is a cellulosic fibre made from wood pulp, carefully sourced from responsibly managed forests.
Our wool is always mulesing-free and is always sourced from suppliers using wool adhering to the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), which ensures that wool comes from farms with a progressive approach to managing their land, and from sheep that have been treated responsibly. However, due to our small batch production for some products, official certfication would be too costly for our supplier, and therefore we are not always able to officially label it as 'RWS certified'. As we grow, we will introduce more certified wool to provide additional reassurance.
Regenerative cotton is grown in a way that aims to improve soil health, increase biodiversity, and reduce carbon emissions.
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or GMOs, using farming methods that promote soil health and biodiversity. As far as possible, we buy cotton that is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which ensures it is made from certified organic raw materials and processed in a way that's both environmentally and socially responsible.
European Flax is a natural, sustainable and traceable plant-based fibre, grown in Europe.
Where a style is described as undyed, this means it is made using unbleached or unprocessed fibres that retain the natural colour of the raw fibre, avoiding harmful dyes & chemicals.
At AKYN, every piece is designed with consideration of the impact that it will have on the planet and its inhabitants during its entire lifecycle. This includes the animals we share our planet with.
Our collection is crafted primarily from four thoughtfully chosen fibres: organic or regenerative cotton, European flax, botanically sourced Lyocell, and wool. Each material is selected for its lower environmental impact and ability to support a more harmonious relationship with nature.
By choosing natural and organic fibres over synthetic alternatives, we help reduce the use of harmful pesticides that pollute water systems, degrade soil, and threaten wildlife habitats. Synthetic garments, when washed, also release microplastics into our oceans—contributing to the growing crisis of marine pollution and the endangerment of aquatic life.
Wool is a core fibre in our collection—valued for its natural warmth, durability and circular properties. As an animal-derived material, its sourcing demands the highest welfare standards. We only work with suppliers who share this commitment and provide:
- Mulesing-free wool
- Wool certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS)
- Recycled wool
We do not tolerate animal cruelty in any form. We work closely with our partners to ensure humane, traceable, and transparent practices.
We do not use leather, fur, angora, mohair, or any exotic or endangered animal skins in any part of our collection.
We partner with suppliers who share our commitment to people and planet. All of our partner mills use OEKO-TEX® certified dyes.
Our denim is made in the EU, meeting stringent EU regulations on wastewater treatment and environmental impact. We use ozone treatments for mid-wash denim, reducing water, energy, and chemicals compared to traditional methods.
We also embrace undyed fabrics, like organic jersey, ecru denim, and naturally coloured wool, minimising our impact by avoiding harmful dyes and celebrating the beauty of raw materials.
